Not everyone following this blog is French, or even European, so I'd like to introduce to whoever doesn't know about it this very French tradition.
On January 6th, Christians celebrate the arrival of the Kings to greet the newly born Jesus.
On that day and actually during the whole months of January, you won't be able to meet a French family without having to eat the famous galette.
The round cake is made out of "frangipane", a mix of almond powder, butter and sugar, between two layers of" pâte feuilletée". The interesting thing in this cake however, is the presence of a so -called "fève", a little figure of plastic or kind of porcelain.
The traditional ones used to represent the holy family, the kings or the shepherds from the story. Today they are just fashionable, representing characters of movies like Avatar.
Traditionally, the cake is cut into equal pieces. The youngest member of the family then has to hide under the table. The person cutting the pieces asks him "For whom is this one?". The child under the table will give the name of one of the guests.
Thus the pieces are distributed completely randmoly and nobody can steal the fève.
While eating somene will eventually bite in the fève, He is then declared King (or Queen of course). Which gives him no other right than to receive the paper crown and to buy another galette if he wants...
