After Christmas, I travelled along with my family to South Tunisia (Tozeur more precisely). It was my first encounter with the desert and like probably many of you reading this article, I naively thought that desert is sand lying everywhere, in possibly high dunes.
Well that's incorrect, as I delightly discovered.
In South Tunisia, you get to see three types of deserts first of all:
The Erg is the actual sand desert like you imagine it, and it already comes in two colours: white/yellowish in the northern part of the Sahara, and reddish in the southern parts, like in Sudan or Mauritania
The second type is the Reg, or stone desert
The last one is the Chott, the salt desert. Once there was the sea down there... Now only the salt remains...
And here and there, in big or small, appears the colour of life: Green
